EMERGENCY MINISTRY Lugarno Peakhurst Uniting has a very extensive role in helping communities in NSW recover following disaster.
Rev. Dr. Stephen Robinson is the coordinator of the NSW Disaster Recovery Chaplaincy Network – a group of clergy from a wide range of denominations across the state. So far we have trained (or about to train) men and women from the following: Salvation Army, Assemblies of God, Churches of Christ, Uniting, Catholic, Buddhist, Jewish (Jewish Emergency Management Plan), Baptist and have requested nominations from Anglican and Presbyterian clergy. This network was formed to meet a need of spiritual care in the NSW disaster welfare plan. Since November 2009, Stephen has conducted training courses for clergy from across the state, in cooperation with Red Cross and Community Services to teach clergy how to respond to traumatised people and communities, and work cooperatively with local clergy in the restoration of their communities in the time following tragedy. Stephen is partly financed by the UCA Synod of NSW/ACT, and the project is supported by the Federal Government through an National Emergency Volunteer Support Fund (NEVSF) grant. The congregation supports this work directly in a number of ways: Members of the congregation make holding-crosses, ladies form our Wednesday knitting group knit trauma teddies and ‘wraps with love’ blankets which are given to chaplains to pass on to victims. The church supports the release of Stephen to do other training and speaking across the state at combat agency chaplains’ conferences. In 2010 Stephen will be speaking at chaplaincy conferences for NSW Ambulance, Police, RFS and Chaplaincy Australia (AOG NSW). .... read more about Emergency Ministry

In uniting, the members of those bodies testified to "that unity which is both Christ's gift and will for the Church".
